SURJ August Door Knock

Please join SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) August door knocks! Actions like this are a great way to practice having conversations about racial justice with other white folks, which is something our POC partners have asked SURJ to do.

This month we will have a particular focus on Quanice Hayes, a 17 year old black youth who was murdered by the Portland Police on February 9, 2017.  At the door we'll ask people to sign a postcard to Multnomah DIstrict Attorney Rod Underhill demanding accountability, training, and an investigation into Quanice's death.

In the past, participants have wanted more time to knock on doors and talk to people. We are trying something new and inviting experienced people to door knock with us on Tuesday, August 29th from 5pm to 8:30pm. We will NOT have a training before the Tuesday door knock, so only sign up if you have already attended one of our door knock trainings on Saturday the 26th or at a previous action.

  • Saturday, August 26th from 12:30 to 4:30
    All are welcome!
  • Tuesday, August 29th from 5pm to 8:30pm
For people who have previously done a SURJ doorknock

WHERE: Hollywood Senior Center at 1820 NE 40th Ave, Portland.

WHAT: On Saturday, we’ll start with a training, head off in pairs to canvass the Hollywood/Grant Park neighborhoods, and return to the training location to debrief. If you have knocked before and want to skip the training, plan to arrive at 1:30 pm and let us know your plans in advance. On Tuesday, we'll meet to briefly review logistics and materials before heading out to doorknock.

RSVP: Please let us know if you’re planning to show up! Follow this link to rsvp for either action by Thursday, August 24th.

WILL THERE BE SNACKS? Yes! We recommend that you bring a water bottle or travel mug to take with you while canvassing.

CAN KIDS COME? Yes! But because of limited interest in the past there will not be child care provided.
