Talk on Internet Racism to be Presented in St. Johns
Portland, OR – A free talk on how our online activities can be used to fuel racist agendas without our knowledge will be presented on Thursday, August 15 th , 7:00 pm, at the Portland Baha’i Center in St. Johns. The Baha’i Center is located at 8720 N. Ivanhoe Street, Portland, OR 97203. The talk is sponsored by Take PART (Portland Anti-Racism Team) as part of a monthly series that explores the many ways people are bombarded with racist messages, how to recognize and delete these messages, and to consciously build equitable communities.
Presenter Donna Stewart will explore how extensive tracking, selling and manipulating of personal data is used to promote racial prejudice in employment, banking and finance, criminal justice, and predatory advertising. Ms. Stewart’s talk, inspired by the book, Weapons of Math Destruction, by Cathy O’Neil, will shine a light on the internet’s dark side. There will be time for discussion and light refreshments following the presentation.
