Give-tober is our annual collection drive for hygiene supplies and healthy food to support our Clothing Closet and Good Samaritan Food Pantry programs. Donations from this collection campaign will go directly toward supporting folks in our neighborhood.

St. Johns Community Clothing Closet - SJCO’s Clothing Closet program provides a full range of new and gently-used garments for children and families, interview clothes for jobseekers, as well as diapers, feminine hygiene products, and other necessaries at no cost. The Clothing Closet is open twice per month on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays or on a daily basis for emergency drop-ins. Additionally, SJCO operates a satellite Clothing Closet at Sitton Elementary school in St. Johns. Since opening its doors in November 2017, SJCO has distributed over 20,000 needed items to 1,500 community members through the Clothing Closet.

Good Samaritan Food Pantry - Since 1983, the Good Samaritan Food Pantry has alleviated hunger for the low-income residents of St. Johns. This established community pillar is an Oregon Food Bank distribution site that supplements the grocery budget of nearly 3,600 neighbors in need every year. At the end of last year, after several setbacks, the food pantry was set to close its doors for good. To prevent the permanent closure of this long-running community service, which has been temporarily closed since December 2018, we met with the food pantry’s board of directors and volunteered to take over and continue its management. This decision was impacted by speaking with multiple community members who described being unable to access nutritious, affordable food, especially during the winter months when the St. Johns Farmers Market is not in operation. We assumed control of the food pantry’s operations in February 2019 and are in the process of making much-needed improvements to the space. The plan is to re-open the food pantry in the fall of 2019.

Items we’re accepting:

  • New socks and underwear (all sizes and genders, including kid’s sizes)

  • Body soap and shampoo

  • Deodorant and baby powder

  • Wipes

  • Baby diapers (all sizes)

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste

  • Winter hats and gloves (all sizes and genders, including kid’s sizes)

  • Healthy and nutritious snacks like trail mix and granola bars

  • Canned food such as beans, tuna, soups, veggies, and fruit

  • Whole grain cereal, oatmeal, and granola

  • Nut butters: peanut, almond, sesame, etc.

Here’s where you can drop off donations:

  • Center for Opportunity, 7302 N Richmond Ave, Tues - Fri from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • St. Johns Coffee Roasters, 7304 N Leavitt Ave, Mon - Fri from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • St. Johns Farmers Market, N Philadelphia & N Ivanhoe, Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • The Man’s Shop (Clothing items ONLY), 8511 N Lombard St, Mon - Fri from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
