Regional Organizer - Welcome Home Coalition - Full-time

The Welcome Home Coalition seeks a Regional Organizer committed to Welcome Home’s mission and vision. The Organizer will lead Welcome Home’s outreach efforts to people with lived experience of houselessness and housing insecurity, coordinate regular leadership and advocacy trainings for people with lived experience, engage Welcome Home members through the development of local housing action plans, and assist in expanding the coalition’s organizational membership.

The Organizer will care deeply about people experiencing houselessness and believe that everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home. They will have a strong sense of social justice and understand the value of relationships. They will have an empathetic nature and will be able to understand the situations, needs and motivations of individuals, groups, and organizations we work with.

The Organizer will have strong writing, group facilitation, public speaking, and rapport-building skills and love working with people from all walks of life. They will be self-motivated and thrive in an environment where priorities can shift quickly. They will be organized and detail-oriented. They will be a strategic thinker, and not afraid to implement new ideas and strategies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead Welcome Home’s organizing efforts with people with lived experience of homelessness and housing insecurity;

  • Coordinate Welcome Home’s regular housing advocacy and leadership trainings for people with lived experience;

  • Build relationships with community members and organizations that broaden Welcome Home’s membership, and strengthen civic engagement in communities throughout the Portland region;

  • Represent Welcome Home at community meetings and forums;

  • With Welcome Home’s director and coalition members, design and implement local action plans for community engagement;

  • Recruit and train individuals and organizations to advocate for issues on Welcome Home’s public policy agenda; inspire them to increase their support of our advocacy efforts.

  • Identify, develop, and support community leaders and spokespeople, including those who directly experience poverty and hunger.

  • Develop and lead presentations and trainings; represent Welcome Home at community events.

  • Collaborate with staff throughout the Welcome Home Coalition on shared goals.

Skills & Experience

  • Personal or professional experience in community organizing and/or outreach;

  • Demonstrated success building relationships and collaborative efforts with individuals and communities of diverse ethnicities, cultures, abilities, faiths, and economic backgrounds;

  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers;

  • Strong presentation, training, public speaking, and facilitation skills;

  • Experience empowering community members to share their stories publicly, especially with public officials and the media, and become involved as advocates themselves;

  • Strong communication skills; able to tailor messages about public policy issues to different audiences, from novices to experts;

  • Strategic thinking skills;

  • The ability to consistently apply an equity lens to day-to-day work;

  • Ability to work independently at times, and as part of a larger team;

  • Experience using a variety of computer software (MS Office, GSuite, etc.);

  • Access to personal vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license preferred, but not required;

  • Being multilingual/ESL is a plus, though not required

Compensation: $40,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on experience
