Volunteer With Us!

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
— Dr. Seuss

We heart St. Johns! We also heart the incredible community members who share their time and talents to make our neighborhood a better place to live and work. There are a number of ways that people can volunteer and engage with our organization.

We do ask all volunteers to participate in our volunteer orientation before they start volunteering with us. We offer these orientations once per quarter at our office. The next orientation will be Wednesday, October 3rd from 6:30-7:30 pm. We do recognize that there might be instances where people will start volunteering with us before they attend orientation. Sign up on our form below and we'll work with you to get signed up for our next orientation.

outreach volunteer

As an outreach volunteer, you'll help with things like passing out flyers, door-knocking efforts, and visiting local businesses to pass along information about upcoming programs. We'll send out an email at the beginning of each month letting you know about opportunities to participate. You can sign up for as little or as many outreach happenings as you'd like!

event volunteer (including Farmers market)

Have just a couple of hours to volunteer throughout the year? There seems to always be some sort of event going on where we could use extra sets of hands to help set-up, tear-down, or help us run an event. We'll send out an email at the beginning of each month letting you know about opportunities to participate.

Clothing Closet

There are lots of opportunities to help out with our Clothing Closet. From helping with sorting clothes to managing check-in in when the closet is open to helping shoppers find what they're looking for, we need lots of helping hands! The Clothing Closet is currently open once a month on the 3rd Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Data Entry volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to help with entering donor and stakeholder information into our database. This is the perfect job for a volunteer who loves data entry and keeping things organized! Plus, we can be flexible to accommodate your schedule during open office hours.

work groups

Work groups meet regularly throughout the year and collaborate to support our four key areas of work.

The Business Resource Team works to support our local businesses and strengthen our local economy through a variety of ongoing projects and events.
Meets: 2nd Wednesday monthly, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at the Center for Opportunity office.

Housing committee

This team works to implement the activities highlighted in the St. Johns Housing Action Plan
Meets: 2nd Tuesday monthly, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Opportunity office.

Rivergate Transportation Advocacy Team (RTAG)

This team is advocating for stronger transportation options to-and-from the industrial area of our neighborhood. With thousands of job openings in the industrial area, it is important to us that community members and other Portland-area residents can access these jobs.
Meets: Every 3 weeks on Friday morning, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. at the Center for Opportunity office.
