Small Business Support
As a part of our economic empowerment work, the Center for Opportunity serves local businesses by offering technical assistance and coaching services and grant funding. Our goal is to support individual business owners and help them thrive.
Matching Storefront Grants
Our grant program awards businesses with matching funds for storefront improvement projects. Applicants may request funds between $250 and $5,000. Since 2014, we have invested over $138,000 in commercial properties in the downtown business district.
Micro Promotional Grants
Launched in September 2018, the Micro Promotional Grant program will provide approximately $2,200 in matching funds to businesses in St. Johns. Each applicant will be eligible for up to $500 in funding to support business promotional efforts. The Center for Opportunity will administer funding between now and the end of April 2020, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Business Technical Assistance
As a part of Prosper Portland's Small and Microenterprise Business Development Program, MESO (Microenterprise Services of Oregon) has teamed up with us to provide high quality technical assistance and training to business owners in the community. A staff member from their team is regularly available to meet with new and emerging business owners at the Center for Opportunity.
Social Media Marketing Assistance
Bizzy Lizzie has teamed up with us to provide high quality social media marketing assistance and training to business owners and nonprofits in the community. Liz Smith, owner of Bizzy Lizzie, will be hosting regular office hours at the Center for Opportunity to meet with new and emerging business owners.
Connecting Businesses to Open Space
Our team monitors commercial space in our service area and maintains a list of open spaces. We work closely with business owners looking to identify space in our corner of North Portland by connecting them to our list of vacancies and/or introducing them to property owners.
